Staying Sane on Social

There has been many discussions in the media to do with mental health and how social media affects us, we often spend hours a day mindlessly scrolling and soon enough we become uninspired and a little depressed. Our social media feed is covered in good-looking people, envious destinations and luxury items that are way out of our price tag, it’s understandable that we can get a little caught up in the social media world.

Of course, there are many benefits to social media such as connecting with your friends, sharing your life with people you care about, springing up new friendships and growing your business. Our entire trade revolves around influencer marketing and social media management and in reality; we think the good elements definitely out weigh the bad, but it’s also important to switch off sometimes too.

We’ve put together some tips to help you feel refreshed and know what to do when you want to switch of the gram for a while…

Turn off your phone / put it to silent mode ~ I always put my iPhone on Do Not Disturb in the evening, it’s a great way to switch off and it gives me peace of mind knowing my phone isn’t going to flash up every five minutes with notifications. If you can, put your phone outside your bedroom so you’re not tempted to go on it when it’s time to go to bed. Alternatively, if you use your phone for an alarm, put your phone on charge and turn on Do Not Disturb about an hour before you’re due to go to bed, reducing the chances of temptation!

Drink calming tea ~ Peppermint tea is a great natural remedy to calm your anxiety and is known to relax your muscles, this is great for winding down and feeling relaxed. For those who struggle to sleep, chamomile tea boasts all the qualities of peppermint but is known to cure insomnia too.

Read a book ~ Books are a great way to switch off from social and keep your mind busy, write yourself a reading list and see if you can read all of the books.

Take an evening stroll ~ This is especially good to do in the summer, walking is a form of meditation and also a form of exercise! This is a great way to relieve stress and enjoy the fresh air. Try a half an hour walk and consider leaving your phone.

Put on a face mask ~ Nothing says relax more than a face -mask, hydrate your skin and give yourself some TLC. Stick on your favourite playlist and unwind.

Write a to do list ~ Take off the stress of work by organising your workload for the following day; you’ll feel more prepared and it’s a great way to prioritise your tasks.

Go to the gym ~ We all know that going to the gym or exercising releases endorphins which make us feel good! Going to the gym can also release stress; it’s also great for your mental health.

Finally, here’s 3 ways to avoid letting social media control the way you feel:

1. Don’t compare yourself to others. You are just as lovely as they are, nobody’s life is as good as they portray on Instagram.

2. Unfollow anyone who makes you feel bad about yourself. Make sure your feed inspires you and motivates you.

3. Nothing is what it seems. Social media shows the best of people’s life; so don’t be sucked into what you see and let’s not forget FaceTune.

We’re not saying you should stay off social forever, but finding a healthy balance between social media and real life is important for your mental health. Stop mindlessly scrolling; make genuine connections and comment on posts that makes you feel good.
